MAAP President VADM Eduardo Ma R. Santos AFP (Ret) welcomed President Ferdinand R. Marcos at the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) as it became the venue for the Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge (BCIB) Milestone Ceremony on March 31, 2023 in Mariveles, Bataan.

Prior to the official launch of BCIB during the program proper, VADM Santos assisted President Marcos Jr. as he received a briefing inside the MAAP Motion Bridge Simulator on its significance in the project's construction.

“The bridge simulation of MAAP is realistic and very impressive. It furthers their maritime competitiveness across the globe”, PBBM expressed.

The President spearheaded the ceremonial switching of BCIB geotechnical investigation drilling equipment together with Senator Mark A. Villar, House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, Bataan Governor Jose Enrique S. Garcia III, and Cavite Vice Gov. Athena Bryana D. Tolentino, which signaled the beginning of DPWH's largest infrastructure project.

The 32-kilometer long cable-stayed bridge, which will straddle Manila Bay and will pass through Corregidor Island, is expected to link the provinces of Bataan and Cavite, cutting the travel time from the current five (5) hours to 45 minutes.

In addition to touting benefits including lowering logistic costs, easing traffic congestion in the densely crowded Manila, improving social mobility, and fortifying economic ties, it will develop seaports in Cavite and Bataan as significant international ports.

The said project is deemed to benefit the shipping industry for it will maximize the maritime trade potentials with the construction of two cable-stayed navigation bridges, the North Channel Bridge with a main span of 400 meters and the South Channel Bridge with a main span of 900 meters.

Funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) under a contract with Consultant, T.Y. Lin International to advance the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) project’s detailed engineering design and bid documents, the four-lane inter-island bridge is slated to start in late 2023, and be completed before the end of the President’s term.
